The Ants recently had a bouncing baby boy!  Congratulations Flik And Atta!  Atta is Jewish so they had a bris yesterday.  Growing up in NYC, I've had a lot of Jewish friends when I was younger.  So I've been to tons of bar and bat mitzvahs, but never a bris.  A little gruesome, if you ask me.  A few decades ago, circumcision was a common "hygenic" practice in the US, but nowadays, the pendulum seems to have swung back against circumcision.  Both of the pediatricians we've had have leaned us away from it.  Anyway, it's a religious ritual, so whatever.  Atta's parents flew in from the midwest, so the whole family is pretty excited (as you would expect).

For some reason, I thought at the bris everyone gathered around the table while the kid was getting a little taken off the top, but it was actually fairly discreet.  The mohel and the grandparents went off to the side and did it.  And I thought the baby would be screaming in horror, but he barely said anything (he's a quiet baby).  Or maybe it was the local anesthetic and sip o Manischewitz (sweet wine).  And there was a strange moment when they were talking about what to do with the foreskin (most people bury with with an ancestor), but the grandma had it in a ziploc bag in her pocket (rather than in the freezer).  Then Mrs. Fly said "don't put it next to the food I brought!"  Kind of felt like it was going to be a Larry David / Curb Your Enthusiasm moment.  At least for today, it's true what they say... you learn something new every day.

WHAT'S FOR DINNER?

In honor of the bris, I present, cut up Korean maki rolls.  There's no raw fish in these.  Not sure why theses aren't more popular in the US.  They're basically like California rolls, but I think it tastes much richer (ie better), because:
* instead of imitation crab meat, we add SPAM!!!  Among the trailer foods, Spam has got to be one of the best. How can you go wrong with FRIED SPAM, wrapped in rice?  You can't...  Unless you are on some kind of whale watch... eh hem.
* instead of cucumbers, we add sweet pickled radish (the dark yellow thing).  It's got a nice sweet, tangy and salty flavor that just kicks the ass out of plain cucumber.  We also sometimes add carrots or marinated spinach, so more vitamins too!
* instead of avocado, we use a seasoned egg omlette (the light yellow thing).  Maybe a toss-up, with the edge going to the thing more like a dead animal.  :-)

It looks like Mrs. Fly also added some fish cake to this as well (the lighter pink thing).  I personally like the kimbop (literally seaweed rice) whole, but others like it cut up.  Not that different from circumcision in this regard.

So that's 3 to 0 in favor of Korean kimbop and it's like half the cost!  Altho tbh, it taste better freshly made at home.  I don't think I've ever had one at a store that tasted as good as Mrs. Fly's or my mom's.  It's more of a "hot" roll, where California rolls are somewhat "cold" - so it's best when eaten soon after making.  So maybe that's why you don't see it as much.  They are still worth a try tho.
