We had a great time at the country club Halloween party on Friday. I had never been to a party at a country club before and a few things stood out. The costumes are in general of higher quality than any other Halloween party I had been to. I would say about half of the people wore what looked like "movie quality" costumes - they could have just walked on the set of Amadeus or Robin Hood and would have looked perfectly fine. No M&M or socket and plug costumes there.
We (and an Indian woman) were the only Asians there. In fact, there weren't any blacks and I don't even remember seeing any Hispanics either (unless they were from Spain or something and looked white to us). I definitely felt welcome there, but it's a little surprising this day and age, in a suburb of New York City, to see such a lack of ethnic diversity.
Most of the women seemed very fit. A lot of the public school moms kind of let themselves go after they start having kids, but most of the women at this party seemed very healthy. Not sure if it's some sort of weird self-selection, where the flabby don't show up to costume dance parties. Or maybe sending all your kids to boarding school frees up a ton of time to go see a personal trainer. Or maybe if you don't look good, you're more likely to get dumped for a newer model. Or probably all of the above. I think Flik got busted for staring at this pirate hottie. LOL. I should give him some lessons. O wait - I think I just busted myself.
I think the average age of members is close to 60, but many of the younger members showed up. But the music was still mostly from the late 70s and early 80s. They played a big band song and a few modern songs, but I definitely felt like the music was for a slightly older crowd. Hey! Finally a place where I felt like a youngin'!
I haven't been dancing in years. At one point, I went up to the DJ and asked him to play something by New Order, and he says he doesn't have anything. I was just like, "Wat?!? And you call yourself a DJ?!?" If I'm ever thinking of hiring a DJ and I find out they do not own New Order's Substance Volume 1, I would instantly throw them out. Faux DJs. Hmph! Anyway, I'll do my Asian vs non-Asian dance music post some time next week.
The food was pretty good. The food was probably as good as a nice restaurant, which is a little surprising, because a lot of those types of places (wedding hall, golf course, etc) have subpar food. But I've OD'ed on too much good food lately, so I don't really want to talk about it. But here is my 4 course meal...
Smoked salmon appetizer - the chef was obviously excited about the pre-school art class he started taking...
Followed by Surf & Turf entree - a 5oz filet mignon and a crab cake. Not sure where the rest of my steak went. Just thinking about it was pretty scary...
Dessert at the country club - molten chocolate cake ...
Dessert at home - mmm... candy canes... We left my cape and fake teeth and her witch hat out of the picture, but you get the idea. Trick and Treat! ;-)
Thanks again for the great time, Flik and Atta! And you too, Snap and Pop!
