Just found out that one of the regulars decided to quit poker for a while. I didn't realize he had been basically break-even for 6 months. I never thought he was an outstanding player, but I thought he made money. For the past few months, I've basically been talking about poker as a game, but it's a serious competitive endeavor. As with many competitive activities, if you don't keep up with the pace of progress you will get left behind.
Online poker is a fairly new phenomena - maybe around for 10 years or so, and probably only 7 years at a high volume. But there aren't many people who've been consistently at the top of their game over those years. The average level of competition keeps getting better and every month or two a new phenom emerges. Also, I do believe there is a lot of information sharing (via groups of friends), so if you have any weakness in your game, groups of people will figure out how to exploit it. This may sound a little daunting, but I think it's what makes the game challenging and fun.
Also, I want to give a shout out to my brother-in-law in VA who just had knee surgery today. Get well soon. P.S. If you sit on your ass all day like me, there is no chance of injuring yourself.
WHAT'S FOR DINNER
Here's something a little out-of-the-ordinary. We have a Japanese friend who made this pork negimaki-sort of thing at New Year's dinner. I thought it tasted okay, but it was a little dry (as US pork usually is). So this is Mrs. Fly's take on it - wrap it in BACON!!! I guess for pig lovers, it doesn't get better than pork on pork. If you are Paula Deen, you cook it in butter to make it taste better. If you are Mrs. Fly, you wrap it in bacon. Clearly Mrs. Fly >>> Paul Deen. She put some Asian stir-fried vegetables to keep the pipes clean.[edit: Mrs. Fly says it's not bacon but unsmoked marinated pork belly - basically the stuff bacon is made from]
