Happy Anniversary!!! On this day 10 years ago, Mrs. Fly and I walked down the aisle of the church. Even tho I've only been with Mrs. Fly a quarter of my life, it feels like I've known Mrs. Fly *all* my life - I can barely remember what life was like without her. Is that a good or bad thing?!? I think that's good, altho Red and Andy DuFresne probably felt the same way about Shawshank.
FUNNY MOMENTS IN EARLY FLY HISTORY:
We were set up on a blind date (thru someone I knew in business school), and our first phone conversation (where all I wanted to do was figure out when and where to meet) was 2 hours and 15 minutes. I mean that's super-long for what was supposed to be a 5 minute conversation. As the years go on, Mrs. Fly (who has a penchant for exaggeration) keeps adding a few minutes to the total. As of 2010, we are at three and a half hours for that first conversation.
On our first date, I met her at her apartment. She used to live on the fifth floor of a walk-up. It was the middle of winter and I had told her on the phone that I was "somewhat obese" (*only* 240 lbs LOL). It didn't take me long to get up the stairs, but because of the temperature change and my overactive sweat glands, I couldn't stop sweating, so I hung outside of her door waiting to stop sweating. Once it starts, it doesn't stop. Anyway, when it took like 5-10 minutes to ring her doorbell, Mrs. Fly was wondering, "OMG! Most people only take a minute to get up those stairs. How *obese* is this guy?!?" But she says she was pleasantly surprised when she opened the door. :-) Dating tip #27 - lower her expectations.
On our second date, she tried to fish for a compliment by waving her hands in the middle of the table and saying, "people say my hands are my best feature." But your DoubleFly would not be taken in by such a simple ruse and I reached over, put my hand on top of hers and said, "people say I have pretty hands too." I then said that she had a lot of other great features, but apparently, Mrs. Fly was in such shock that I would imply I had nicer hands than she did, that she doesn't remember me ever saying that. I do have nice hands tho. Dating tip #45 - make a lasting impression.
On our third date, Mrs. Fly sang a song about me, and made up an accompanying dance. When I say "dance," I don't mean the sexy I'm-gonna-make-him-mine kind of dance. I'm talking Cheri Oteri on Saturday Night Live when she used to do play the rejected cheerleader with Will Ferrell kind of dancing. Not pretty - just bizarre. Well, I guess it was kind of cute. And unfortunately, it was the same retarded song she sang about her dog on our first date with just the names switched, but hey! I'm not picky. Dating tip #73 - when in doubt, smile.
Maybe I'll post some more "dating tips" later in the week.
