Mrs. Fly's friend from Virginia had to come to NYC for business, so she came up to our house for dinner last week.  Even tho we only see her every few years, we talk about her a lot.  This is because I made the mistake of saying "she has a pleasant face" when we were dating.  One off-handed remark like 10 years ago (!!!), and I relive that moment at least once a year.  Not sure if it's the eye of newt et al, but nothing gets by Mrs Fly - especially when it comes to a secure marriage environment.

So let me explain about the history behind the comment.  Standards for beauty vary across cultures.  Nowadays, features like high cheek bones, angular chin, etc (features Mrs Fly has) are considered positives for beauty.  But among old-time Koreans, softer facial features are preferred. Even tho I've lived here most of my life,  I'm basically a Korean fuddy-duddy.  So it pisses the hell out of Mrs. Fly when I say stuff like, "I married you because you make me laugh."  This is completely true - Mrs. Fly is one of the most entertaining people I know.  Her response is usually something along the lines of "STFU you fat moron!  Am I a clown to you?!?  You married me because I'm beautiful and stylish!!!"  Well, maybe not in those exact words - I'm paraphrasing.  But isn't it funny how women want to be appreciated for their inner qualities, and when you do, they get all pissed off?

Old School Korean Beauty
Modern Korean Beauty
Anyway, here are photos of old-time Korean beauty and modern Korean beauty.  I don't see a lot of Korean faces, so I just took examples from the various Korean dramas we've seen (from 5-10 years ago).  I guess you really can't go wrong between the two choices, but everyone's going to have a preference.  Anyway, if there is a take-away from this post, don't be an honest doofus like me - whatever your girlfriend / fiancee / wife is, is the most beautiful in the world.  Use your poker face and lie if you have to!  ;-)

WHAT'S FOR DINNER?

Mrs. Fly thought we could have some comfort food for dinner.  So here's chicken pot pie, country fried steak and a salad.  Note that my seat (upper left) is the one furthest away from her friend (lower right).  Mrs. Fly's friend brought a tiramisu for dessert.  And for the wandering young adult minds out there, that's all we had for dessert.
