Earlier in the year, I thought G might find kendo (Japanese martial art based on swordsmanship) interesting because he's always loved lightsaber pretend fighting.  But now, I think a more practical martial art may be better.  I took Tae Kwon Do when I was younger and found it...  how shall I say...  ghey?!?  I realize it's one of the most popular martial arts and it's an olympic sport, but a bunch of thugs are not going to be impressed by the pretty forms or the ability to count to ten in Korean.

Oh yeah?!?  But I can count backwards too!

A buddy of mine recommended Brazilian jiu jitsu - must be an MMA fan.  While every martial art has its merits, IMO grappling's not good for situations other than 1 on 1.  That rear naked choke's not as effective when the guy's buddy is pummeling you in the head.  Also, Mrs. Fly's pretty anal, and I'm sure she wouldn't want G rolling around on the ground.  G needs to learn to kick ass more efficiently and neatly.

If I'm going to spend a lot of time on something, I want it to be useful - for me as well as for G.  So I'm going to check out the local krav maga schools.  I thought it was one of the lesser-known martial arts, but shockingly there are at least four schools within 30 minutes of me.  At least one place nearby has a kid's class so that's what I'm leaning towards (later post).  I think it could be a fun father-son thing.  Who knows, maybe it'll help me lose some weight.

Not sure if they have kids' classes the adults can take at the same time, but we'll see.  Maybe I'll be the champion of the dojo - just like Kramer (from Seinfeld).  I especially liked the karate chop to the head - cracks me up every time.

The martial arts saga continues...
